Must have Monday - Making bebeh food!

I made baby food for Carina for the first time on Saturday night.  A close friend of mine used to work for the First Years and she actually designed their Baby Food Maker!  She sent it to me as a gift.  I took it out of the box and within 10 minutes a lovely bright green batch of pea puree was complete.
The First Years Babypro All In One Baby Food Maker
You pour an ounce of water into the top basket, add food (peas, this time - butternut squash and carrots to come later this week; I'll be sure to let you know how that goes), and then steam for 2 minutes.  Other veggies and fruits take a little longer, but never more than 10 minutes.  Then, you pour the food into the chopper, add some water (I used breastmilk instead), chop, and voila!  Pureed peas!  I cannot believe how easy this was.

I froze the puree in OXO Baby Food Freezer Trays and then popped it out and into a plastic bag once frozen.  It will keep in the freezer for 3 months.  With my $1 bag of frozen peas and 10 minutes I made 12 delightful (arguably) meals for Carina.  And I know what's in it...no scary chemicals whose names you can't pronounce.  Win.

Do you make baby food for your baby?  If so, what do you use?

I make Abbie's baby food, but I just steam in a pot and use the immersion blender to puree. So far I've done sweet potatoes (her absolute favorite), peas, green beans, carrots, apples, pears, mangoes, and peaches. Squash to come this week. I've also given her banana and avecado but I just mush those up with a fork. I do always have some premade food on hand in case of a pinch and to test for allergic reactions, but I make about 90% of what she eats.

She also likes when I add rice cereal or oatmeal.

So far I have just steamed the food in a rice cooker/vegetable steamer and he prefers them whole rather than pureed. I guess we're doing BLW becuase that's what he wants!!!!

With my first I just used a food processor. Worked great so I plan on using it for our next LO as well. I really enjoyed making baby food so I'm looking forward to doing it again!

I did a lot of steaming/pureeing at first. I still do, sometimes. But those convenient jars of "Earth's Best" keep creeping into our cupboards. I don't know how but they do!

i used a 'baby cook' that i got as a shower gift. way more expensive than i'd pay but hey it was free for me. ;) we made tons of beans, squash, peas, and zucchini last summer before baby was born / old enough to eat it and froze for the winter when was was old enough. he hated most of it. LOL. but oh well! ;)

i tried this - and did it for a few weeks but i just couldnt keep up with work and everything else. IF my daycare hadn't provided food, then I would of kept doing it so that she had food @ daycare too - but my daycare provides everything, so i decided it wasnt worth it due to my time contstraints! but now she doesnt eat baby food, so it really was only for a short period :)

im so glad you like it though - hopefully you will have more time than i did!! let the food adventures begin!

I just blogged about feeding solids, too! I roast veggies and puree them in a blender. :)

I plan on making my own baby food as well! I love reading peoples posts about how they make theirs!
Seems pretty simple and just like you said...you know everything that's in it! No crazy things you can't pronounce!

We did BLW so no purees but we did make all of his food (and still make the majority of it at 18 months). And definitely agree about knowing exactly what's going into the kiddo's mouth with no chemicals or additives. It's a small but reassuring thing :)

We make all of Ryan's baby food, too. We really love doing it and it's so easy. We just use a food processor or a blender, depending on how much we're making. We set up a huge assemly line yesterday and in one hour we made: applesauce (which we'll mix with yogurt), spinach, corn, peas, potatoes, squash, cantelope, and pineapple. The kid eats well!

I just saw one of these on tv - well different brand but same idea- and I gotta say I'm seriously considering it!! Especially not having junk I can't pronounce in my little man's food as well as I'm sure it's MUCH cheaper. Does mixing it with breastmilk change how long it keeps for or anything? Definitely going to look into one of these.

Funny, I just blogged about making homemade baby food. I steam my fruits/vegis in a steamer/pot, and then puree in my food processor. Works great! So far I've made sweet potatoes, pears, green beans, carrots, and plums (which didn't turn out well. Holy sour!).

I love making her food. Not only do I like to cook, so I find it fun, but like others have said, it's healthier and cheap!

Cat - mixing it with formula/BM does change how long it lasts, I believe. Just don't add the formula/breastmilk before you freeze. Freeze as is, and then add it when you defrost it. :)

I could never get either of my kids to eat baby food either homemade or store bought. Until they started table foods, wanted nothing to do with it :) New follower from bloggy moms, have a great day! You can find me at

I plan on making my own baby food. I've seen this model of baby food maker, but haven't really found any reviews on it. It's not as "pretty" as some of the other brands, but it's about half the price, so I think I should give it a shot.

Those freezer trays look like a really good investment. Thanks for sharing and linking up today!
