About Me

Hi! I'm Melissa, wife to Mike - a mad scientist, and stay at home Mommy to Carina and Aurelia. I am an extremely type-A former Math-lete who fails at most things domestic. Mike is an oboe playing organic chemist by day and a fearless video game dragon slayer at night. So yeah, I think it's safe to say that our kids won't have a prayer at being cool.

Our daughter Carina was born in December of 2010 and Aurelia arrived in September of 2012. We cloth diaper (sort-of), love geeky things, and are currently struggling to get our little one to chunk up. She was recently diagnosed with Failure to Thrive.

I write about epic baby grossness, vent about stuff that annoys me, confess {sometimes embarrassing} things, and overcoming post-partum anxiety. I post recipes occasionally - usually unhealthy ones that I somehow manage not to fail at. Mike (he blogs every now and then, too!) specializes in making my readers cry, or pee their pants.

We are East coast geeks - I'm from outside of Boston, he's from Philly - but we spent 5 years in Wisconsin while he was a slave to the lab in grad school. He just graduated with his Ph.D. and we moved our little family to New Haven, Connecticut in December of 2011 for his Post-Doctoral Fellowship.

I hope you'll stay a while, check out some of my favorite posts, and geek out with us!

Hi there~

Found you over on Top Baby Blogs today and although I hate math I really like your blog.
My hubs and I currently live outside of Chicago, but are thinking of moving to Madison! I know it's only a temporary landing spot for you, but what do you think of it there?

Hi Kelley! Madison is a lot of fun. We've really enjoyed living here for the past 4-5 years. Shoot me an e-mail if you have any specific questions :)

Hey Lady! I found your blog on the TBB and you had me at "oboe". :) My MIL plays the oboe in a few bands here in the Milwaukee area and swears that one of my girls (we have twins) will be a bassoonist ("you know they get good scholarships"). Anyway, I am loving your geeky blog. Come visit ours sometime!

Love it! I, too, will bequeath unto my hapless offspring a penchant for nerdiness, sci-fi, and alternative music. I have heard, however, that kids are the opposite of their parents, so my kids might be shy and popular (not assertive and outcast, like mom and dad). But who knows? Anyway, love your blog!

So glad I found your blog! I also am a first time mom to a baby girl. My husband and I also love video games. :) Love the kitty photo, too. Our kitty Shadow is our baby too, and we try very hard to have her not feel left out now that we have a two legged baby. ;)

I'm a new blogger and I found your blog over at ELF A Family Blog. I am the first time mom of an almost 2 yr old boy. My fiance is a huge gamer, as is his parents, his dad and his friends have a huge game convention thing for one weekend in july every year and then DnD throughout the year every other weekend lol, Tristan even has a shirt to wear to the conventions. I am a major nerd though not that big into most video games. My fiance loves that I'd rather watch Star Wars or something rather than a chick flick.

Hey there! I am a new blog stalker. I found you over on TMB. Our family is also a bit geeky. Daddy is a computer nerd, Mommy plays MMO's. Your blog is super cute.

Fun finding your blog. Looks like we were neighbors up until recently. Or at least our states were. ;) My husband and I live in Minneapolis. Life long midwestern kids. :)

Ran across your blog looking for people in the same 'boat' as me, as it were. My daughter was also born in 12/2010, and I just found out that we're expecting another in October of this year. My husband is a comp.sci nerd, and I teach piano at home - our kids will also grow up in Geekdom.

Found your blog on thebump.com :) Loved reading it today! If you get a chance, would you mind checking out my Pre-TTC blog? I just started it today, but I plan to Blog & Vlog when we start TTC in July. Have a wonderful night!

I just stumbled upon your blog, and found it to be such a coincidence, it's crazy! I just moved to New Haven, as well- in January. With 2 cats, too. And we moved here because my husband also started a chemistry post doc (though he is inorganic...)! I am going back and reading your posts and it's so nice to see a similar experience blogged about. We don't have any kids yet, but hopefully soon! :)

Woo, an update! :) I <3 the geekiness. My LO is already photographed with my laptop on his lap with a look like "Yes, mom... I fixed your computer." ....of course his linux penguin shirt, 'geekling' onesie and other accessories give away his future anyway >_< I should probably post a picture of us at some point in my "about me"

I read a bunch of your posts the last couple days, and I'm kind of getting addicted to your blog! I love how you are so so open about everything. I'm a super private person, so for me, even having a blog makes me feel kind of vulnerable (but in a good way). Oh, and I can definitely relate to the geekery. My husband has about a bajillion (I didn't say I was smart at math) years of education, and I went to band camp in high school. Enough said.

I'm a "Madisonian" too! I loved this post! It inspires me to comb through some boxes in hopes to dig up my journal...should be interesting reading ;)

Came across your stuffed shells today. Im not a big cooker due to working all the time. But, My son of 19 is wanting them today. So, I typed in easy stuffed shells and found them so wish me luck. They really look good!

Congratulations of the two little ones! My daughter was very close to being diagnosed as 'failure to thrive' and we tried like crazy to get her to eat. She never DID finish an 8 ounce bottle! Ugh! Well, she is 12 now, super petite but healthy as a horse! There is hope!!!!!
