I wish cloth diapering wasn't so overwhelming

My mom used cloth diapers on me, and M's mom used them as well. We would really like to use them for our baby. They are better for the environment and end up costing less in the end (especially if we end up having 3-4 kids, as we hope to).

I just wish there weren't 10 different types of cloth diapers! There are prefolds, pocket diapers, fitted diapers, hybrid diapers (???), and all-in-ones, and that isn't even all of the kinds. It is so overwhelming. I've checked out a bunch of the major websites (i.e. Jillian's Drawers, Kelly's Closet, Nicki's Diapers) and I just can't believe the selection. Within each of the 10 different types, there are at least 4 or 5 different brands or makers.

Seriously, I just need someone to tell me, "this is the cloth diaper for you" and then I can go from there. I find it hilarious that I spent an hour one night this week reading diapers review. Lots of paragraphs on diaper absorbency, susceptibility to leaks, and drying efficiency. Oh, and did I mention that poop poop poop is mentioned over and over? Well, I guess it comes with the territory. has a sale going on right now for some Bumkins diapers. I reluctantly checked it out, since I don't really want to think about buying yet, and before I could scroll to the bottom of the page I had already added two to my cart. It would have been more if the other one I wanted wasn't out of stock! They were $16 instead of $25, and I had a $10 off of $30 coupon both cost me $22! Okay, so here they are, my first cloth diapers:

They are Bumkins Dr. Seuss All-In-Ones (meaning there aren't any inserts or anything like that) and they are size small, for newborns. I just couldn't NOT get them. Ugggh...I'm so weak.

Do you have any advice or thoughts on cloth diapering? I'd love to hear them!

Hey Missie-I don't really have any thoughts as I am just as new to this whole diaper thing myself (in fact I'm not sure which way we'll go yet-cloth or disposable) but I was checking out the blogs I follow tonight and came across this gal who I met on The Bump a WHILE back and she seems to be starting a cloth diaper business and has a website with tonnes of info and tutorials. Might be helpful to check it out?!Her blog is:
Good luck! =)

P.S. I still have my private blog but post a lot on my old blog which is open to anyone (i.e. family and friends) if you care to check it out:

I love that you're gonna CD!

In lurking the EFF board, the advice that resonates with me most is to get a variety of different ones and see which ones work best for your LO. Once you find your favorite, then stock up on it.

I will say that disposable diapers are an insane expense every month, with having 2 in diapers right now. When I was pregnant with Conor though I did a lot of research on the cloth diaper, and I read many different places that they are not in fact better for the environment. With all the utilities used to wash and dry them, they ended up having a more or less equal impact as disposable. and they are a TON of work. the cost is definitely a plus though. I wish I remembered the most helpful article, it compared disposable, a cloth diapering service, or cleaning them yourselves. it was really interesting.

I used both, cloth diapers and disposable ones. You really have to find out what works best for you and your baby. My daughter could pee through certain ones in a matter of minutes and could wear others for hours. So in other words, don't go and spend $300 on a certain brand or style until you try a few. is a good place, is another. She is SO super helpful at and I got a lot from her.
A friend is making cloth diapers on Etsy right now. She seller name is joypuff. If you had old sweaters or blankets you want made into diapers, she can do it.

I just started looking into it too because I really want to use cloth diapers. My head spins also.

Just found a CD blog the other day:

And a couple of other links:

Also, like someone else said, the EFF board is a great place to lurk for info.

Keep me in mind when you find out new stuff!

PS - I love that you want to be a CD mama! OXOXOX

Good for you for at least looking into it and trying it. Saw your other post that said laundering wasn't convenient, etc. We used an early version of the Fuzzy Bunz with mostly success, except for some leakage when they got over a year old and there was a lot of pee. It seems that over just the last couple of years the diapers have been engineered to fit and hold better than they first did. Even though we didn't cloth diaper 100% of the time, we saved a lot of money and water and trash by using them.
