If we could do our registry over again

It's been almost 4 years since we painstakingly created our baby registry. When I was 16 or so weeks pregnant, Mike and I went to Babies R Us on a Sunday afternoon, grabbed a registry barcode scanner, walked around aimlessly, felt overwhelmed, scanned only two things (crib and stroller) and then headed home. I did the rest of it online -- sitting comfortably on my couch. That way, I could read reviews and see everything in a much more organized manner.

I promised this post to a few pregnant friends who read my list of "Favorite Things" and wanted to know how it all turned out. Would I still buy the same items? Are some of the high price tags worth it?

Below is a run down of most of the items on the list and how we feel about them now. I'll also be following up this post with a list of things that weren't on this original list of newborn/baby items but should be, and then lastly I'll share what books and toys we're loving now (like we did a year or so ago). I always love seeing other people's recommendations, so I'll share ours :)

So without further ado…

Stuff we still love

Wubbanub pacifiers
Oh, the wub. How I wish Aurelia ever took a pacifier. Never the less, whoever invented the Wubbanub is a genius. It is a Soothie pacifier attached to a little stuffed animal. They make all different kinds of animals including giraffes, dinosaurs, dogs, and monkeys. Carina loved her kitty more than anything until she broke it when she was about 18 Months old. Up to that point, it was the only pacifier we had for her. After it broke, we went through about 10 soothe pacifiers until we took them away last summer. The wubs are so much easier to keep track of and are so much cuter.

Gerber Birdseye Prefold Cloth Diapers

Everyone told me to get a few packs of these, because they are the best burp cloths and I didn't listen. I registered for and bought pretty burp cloths. The pretty ones look nice, but they aren't absorbent at all. I think most of them are in the trash at this point. These Gerber cloth diapers are so absorbent sometimes I can't even tell that there's spit up all over them! In comparison to the fancy burp cloths, these are super cheap, too.

Aden and Anais Swaddle Blankets
These swaddle blankets are truly the best. We probably have close to 20 different receiving blankets and these are the only ones that we use to swaddle anymore.  They are large and a little bit stretchy; perfect for swaddling! We actually bought another set after it became clear that these were the be-all end-all of swaddle blankets. The prints are super cute, too.

Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes
This little toy plays four different classical music songs including Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Spring (one of my faves). We kept it on the changing table and would give it to the girls during diaper changes because these little squirmies need a distraction. I've bought this as a baby shower/new baby gift for friends a couple times.

MAM Oral Care Rabbit
I bought this on the recommendation of some of the Bump ladies and I am so glad I did. You slip your fingers in the bunny's ears and rub baby's gums. Neither of the girls has been fond of teeth brushing (read: hysterical screaming), but they tolerated this much better than the other (3 or 4) baby toothbrushes we've tried.

Itzbeen Pocket Nanny
It's no secret that I'm obsessed with the Itzbeen. It has been a life saver. Every time you feed baby or change her diaper, you press the button and a timer starts counting. This means at any given time you can see how long it has been since you fed or changed her. I cannot live without this item. We used it just as religiously with Aurelia as we did with Carina and will absolutely use it for any future babies. I know there are phone apps out there that do the same thing but the ease of pushing a button vs. swiping into your phone, into an app, and recording the data can't be beat. I am a heavy iPhone user but will never trade this for an app.

Halo Cotton Swaddle Sleepsack
At around 4 months Carina outgrew our aden + anais Swaddle Blankets. We looked at a number of sleep products like SwaddleMes, the Woombie, and the Swaddlepod, but decided against those designs because we weren't sure for how much longer she would need to be swaddled. This sleepsack, on the other hand, can be used as a sleep blanket with or without the velcro swaddly part. When Carina no longer needed to be swaddled, we unhooked the velcro and took off the swaddle. As soon as we started using this sleepsack, she was back to sleeping through the night almost every night!

Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads
I was using reusable nursing pads at first, but after I leaked through one, my bra, my shirt, and the blanket that was covering me, I knew it was time to try something else. These are great; they have an adhesive backing and will stick to your nursing bra or tank really well, and in over 3 total years of breastfeeding (whoa…) I've never leaked through one. I tried free samples of other brands but always came back to these. If you're nursing, get these. You'll thank me.

Medela PersonalFit Breastshields
It is IMPERATIVE that you make sure you have the right fit while pumping. Otherwise it can be painful and decrease your output. I was using the wrong size for a few weeks when Carina was a newborn and it was painful and I was frustrated that I wasn't pumping much milk. Most breast pumps come with the most popular size (24 mm) and I had no idea that they weren't actually "one-size-fits-all". Check out the guide on the Medela website to see if you have the right fit.

Munchkin Dishwasher Basket
I don't know how I would clean all of my pump parts, the girls' bottle parts,   zippy cup parts, etc. as efficiently if it weren't for this basket.  I just throw everything in there; no hand washing necessary. Saves me so much time. It's been in our dishwasher ever day pretty much since Carina was a few weeks old.

Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags
Anyone who breastfeeds and pumps breastmilk will need a means in which to store said milk. When I started pumping when Carina was 3 weeks old, I poured the milk in these bags when I was done, and then lay them flat in the freezer. These bags hold up great and are super easy to use.

Simple Wishes Hands-Free Breastpump Bra
This bra is amazing and a must-have for anyone who needs to multi-task. I used it at work when I pumped, and I was able to keep on working while I pump. It is so absolutely worth the money for anyone who is planning on pumping at work. It's comfortable and adjustable in size so it's easy to get the perfect fit. There are removable straps that you can use if you need additional support. I've since bought another so I can keep one at work and one at home (as needed).

My Brest Friend Pillow
This pillow literally has become my best friend. It is thick and supportive (not mushy like the boppy) and has a back rest. You don't have to hold the baby in position; your arms are free! It is adjustable and can fit snugly enough that you can stand up and walk around while baby is feeding. It also has a pocket that you can put your cell phone or lanolin in.

Inglesina Table Chair
We've used this chair for both girls and they much prefer it to our giant clunky high chair. The levers under the arms are completely adjustable, so you can attach the seat to tables of any thickness. It folds up really nicely, so it's perfect to bring to restaurants or take with you when you travel. We picked this brand as opposed to others because it had the best reviews on Amazon for table chairs under $50.

ERGObaby Baby Carrier
The Ergo was great for multitasking with both girls. When you have little ones who refuse to be put down, putting them in this will let you get some chores done. In my experience, it often lulled a nap-refusing baby to sleep. It was definitely a must-have for grocery shopping with a newborn and a toddler, too.

Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo
Take my eyes but not this jumper! This is akin to baby crack; both girls had so much fun in it. You can see for yourself in this video of Carina in it. When they weren't tall enough to reach the ground from the lowest setting (the height is adjustable), we simply put a thick Chemistry text book under their feet. Worked great.

Fisher Price Precious Planet Swing
Carina and Aurelia both slept in this swing every night for a few months when they were newborns. They LOVED it and slept through the night and what tired Momma & Daddy don't want sleep? This particular model is great because you can use it with either batteries or the plug-in adapter. I would make love to this swing if I could. I'm not kidding. I tested a different brand/type of swing for a Mom's Panel I'm in when Aurelia was a newborn and it didn't even compare. I'm not sure if they sell this exact model anymore, but look for any of the Fisher Price cradle swings. Same idea and function.

Fisher-Price Playtime Bouncer, Precious Planet
Both Carina and Aurelia could sit in this bouncer all day. But don't worry, I didn't let them. It's stored in Aurelia's closet now and if I'm cleaning or rearranging in there, they still like to take it out and play with it. If you can handle the cuteness, take a look at the video of her adorable 'dancing'. This was my go-to item when I need a few minutes to pee or get something to eat.

Stuff we're "meh" about or would do differently

JJ Cole Car Seat Cover
These are a good alternative to the JJ Cole Bundle Mes because they don't go between baby and the car seat (and hence won't void your car seat's warranty). We have 2, but honestly I think a thick baby blanket works just as well.

Fisher-Price Precious Planet Tub
This thing is huge and takes up a ton of space. I'm not sure there are many great alternatives out there, but we'd probably try to find something less bulky. Maybe one like this that looks like it fits in the kitchen sink - The First Year's Infant To Toddler Tub.

ERGObaby Original Infant Insert
Neither of the girls was very comfortable in the Ergo infant insert. I've heard you can use a wrapped up receiving blanket and it works just well. And anyways, I found the Moby Wrap to be better suited for the newborn stage.

Fisher-Price Rainforest Peek-a-Boo Soother, Waterfall
Carina enjoyed this, but it eats batteries. We've since opted for the Soundspa Lullaby Sound Machine and Projector. We have one for each of the girls' rooms now. They're not perfect (the projector motor craps out every now and then) but they are comforting and can stay on all night (instead of shutting off after 20 minutes).

Baby Jogger City Mini Single Stroller
I really liked this stroller, BUT -- if you are planning on having more than 1 kid, I'd really consider a single stroller that can convert into a double. I wish we had done this. Because now we have this stroller, and also the Double, and they both take a lot of space. If we could do it all over again I think I'd go for either the phil&teds Navigator or the Baby Jogger City Select.

Fisher-Price Rainforest Melodies & Lights Deluxe Gym
Both girls enjoyed this gym but it falls apart every freaking 5 minutes. We have to constantly put the four corners of it back into the play mat and snap the top back together. Maybe we just got a defective one? I won the Tiny Love My Nature Pals Move & Playmat at BlogHer shortly before Aurelia was born and like this one a lot better.

Boppy Nursing Pillow
I didn't use the Boppy for nursing, I much prefer the My Brest Friend Pillow for that -- we used it for baby lounging. Just a place to hang out when the girls couldn't yet sit up on their own. In retrospect, any old pair of pillows would have done just fine (and have done just fine).

Fisher-Price Precious Planet Mobile
We didn't use this mobile much past the first few months for either of the girls. We opted for the Soundspa Lullaby Sound Machine and Projector and handmade mobiles instead. We took the little animals off and the girls still play with them, though.

Fortunately, there really haven't been any items that we initially liked only to find them unbearable later on. Just a few things for which we probably would have considered other options had we known then what we know now.

Moms out there, please feel free to add any advice or must-have items, or things you wish you hadn't bought.

Just put the last few twigs in the nest

Not even a week before Aurelia will sleep in it for the first time, we have finally finished our shared nursery (or as Mike just adorably referred to it as the nest). It was a bit of a project fitting both cribs and everything else in such a small room, but we managed {for now}. Hopefully when we move in a year or so, the girls will each have their own space.

Carina was so excited as I took these pictures. She ran around the room to "show" me everything.

As you might notice, we didn't change much. Carina's nursery contained most of the same before. What's new? We finally got their mobiles hung up, put a few things on the walls, and decluttered. Oh, and the second crib, of course.
Mobile - custom made by Aprilderek
Aurelia's mobile
Amanda
Amanda from Aprilderek contacted me about making a mobile for baby Aurelia months before she was even born. (Fun fact: Amanda was due with a baby girl at the end of September, too!) The owl, bird, and flower mobile fits our green nursery colors and woodland theme perfectly. Each felt critter, flower, the tree branch base (my favorite!), and the letters of Aurelia's name on circles all the way around the mobile are intricately and beautifully crafted. I love how each bird and owl is unique and are decorated on both sides.

A little about Amanda:
I am a 26 year old stay at home mom to one darling baby girl. I simply love crafting! A couple of years ago I discovered Etsy.com, a site where everything is either handmade or vintage, and I knew immediately that I wanted to sell on this site! I began brainstorming. I wanted my designs to be cute, yet modern. After some prototypes, I came up with several baby mobile designs. I was hooked and still am :-)

We put Aurelia in her crib for a few minutes today to let her become acquainted with it. Upon setting her down, she stared right at the mobile and cooed. I think it's safe to say she likes it. Carina pointed at it and said, "that's amazing!" too. Thanks so much for making such an adorable mobile, Amanda :)

Well there you have it...the nest is finished and hopefully {fingers crossed} Aurelia will sleep in it happily come Friday night. I am so eager -- and nervous -- to see how they manage sleeping together in the same room. If your kids share a room, how does it go?

What I wish I had the first time around

I swear we accumulate more baby stuff than I ever thought humanly possible. Yet, there are times when I find myself thinking that life would be easier if I just had this one more item. Which of course leads to impulse spending in the name of stress relief, convenience, or simply "OMG-she-is-just-going-to-love-it!"

Here are the 10 items (in no particular order) that we have been using with Aurelia, that I wish we had purchased for Carina because they are that awesome.

1. Rock n Play Sleeper

When Carina roomed in with us, she slept in our Pack n Play. Problem is, we can't fit one in our room this time around. A gazillion of my Mom friends recommended the Rock n Play and we were so happy to receive it as a gift. Aurelia sleeps in it every night and naps in it during the day. We take it along with us whenever we travel since it folds up easily and compactly.

2. Infant Bath Sponge

We thought we loved our plastic infant tub shaped like a whale in which we bathed Carina, but we couldn't find it when Aurelia was born and didn't want to buy a new one, so we got one of these $5 bath sponges. I didn't even know they existed until my Mother-in-law bought one to keep at her house. You just fill your regular tub with a few inches of water and lay baby on the sponge. I much prefer doing this over lugging out the tub, setting it up, draining it, cleaning it, etc.

3. Carseat Side Kick

I can't tell you how many times I woke Carina up while placing her in her car seat. This little contraption uses magnets to hold the car seat straps off to the side, allowing you to place baby in the seat without having to manhandle her to strap her in. It also comes in handle when we're at a restaurant and want to let her sit in the seat comfortably.

4. Sound & Projection Machine

Again, we thought we loved our previous sound machine (Sleep Sheep) until I purchased this one. The Sleep Sheep just wasn't cutting it, as Aurelia would wake up as soon as it shut off. Many of my Mom friends recommended this Homedics sound spa as "baby crack" and Aurelia seems to agree. There are a number of different sounds AND a projector, and you can leave it on indefinitely or set a timer for automatic shut off.

5. Magnificent Baby Clothes

I won this little sleeper in a giveaway and I am SO glad I did. Instead of snaps or zippers, it has magnet closures. You can literally just move the two sides of the sleeper close to one another and the magnets snap together instantly. This is genius. I only wish they weren't so expensive or I'd ditch the snaps and zippers forever. Hear that, Carters? MAGNETS. Do it up, pretty please.

6. Video Monitor

I really don't know how we did without a video monitor. I snagged this Infant Optics one on Amazon for $99 and it's been a great purchase so far. Aurelia cries out in her sleep quite often, and being able to look and see she is still sleeping saves me from having to dash across the house multiple times over the course of the day. Also? Sometimes she doesn't even make a peep when she wakes up so this way I can see those little eyes open.

7. Tiny Love Gym

We already have a play gym, but this was a BlogHer giveaway win and it looked like fun so I figured we'd give it a try. I thought I loved our other gym (Fisher Price Rainforest)...until we started using this one. The mat snaps together for easy storage and transport, the toys are fun, the little caterpillar that plays music is detachable, and the toy rings/hooks and center link that holds the four "legs" together are movable. This makes for some really cool flexibility.

8. Trash Dash

We had a major stink problem with our disposable diaper pails before we switched to using primarily cloth diapers. I think we went through 3 or 4 of them because we'd toss them when they reached a certain level of offensiveness. A few sprinkles of this in the pail and we were free of less-than-pleasant aromas when we were using disposables regularly with Aurelia.

9. Cloth Diapers

You might recall that we didn't begin cloth diapering with Carina until we moved to Connecticut when she was a year old. In her first few months of disposables, the blowouts were epic. I won't go into detail since no one wants to hear that, but trust me in that it was awful and frustrating. Since using cloth with Aurelia, I think we've had maybe one, and it wasn't even that bad. Our favorite diaper for Aurelia right now is the Bum Genius 4.0.

10. Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance

So far, all of the items have been in no particular order. But? This one is so spectacular I've saved it for last and am going to elaborate on it.

Baby Bjorn sent me their Babysitter Balance to try out. It is a durable mix of cotton and polyester and has three different positions for baby: sleep, rest, and play. So far we have almost exclusively used the play position. I think the rest and sleep positions would be super useful with a newborn; so I wish we had gotten it sooner! There is also a super compact transport mode that is great for storage or travel. We brought it to Philadelphia last week and it took up much less trunk space than I was anticipating.

With an ergonomic design with a molded seat that distributes weight evenly, Aurelia loves sitting in the Babysitter Balance. She sits up very high, which distinguishes it from other bouncers. She is in more of a sitting/standing position than reclining/lying down. Evidenced by the fact that she will sit happily for a long period of time in the Babysitter Balance and won't in our other bouncer, I think she prefers this one!

How does it work? Baby kicks her legs and the bouncer moves gently. There are no batteries, vibrations, or music...just baby's own movements making the bouncer rock. Aurelia also loves when I manually bounce it, giggling and cooing all the while. Sometimes I attach a toy to the seat so she can play while I cook, do dishes, etc. She also hangs out in the Babysitter Balance while Carina takes a bath. Because she's up so high, she can look down into the tub and watch Carina play (and laugh while Carina splashes water everywhere, ugh).
It's designed for newborns through age 2, 8-29 lbs. I can attest to the fact that Carina also enjoys lying back on it and bouncing a little ;) It weighs 5 lbs. and measures 16 in x 32 in. The fabric is machine washable and comes off (and goes back on) easily. The harness is also detachable and machine washable. There are anti-glide strips on the base and legs so that it won't slide around.

The Babysitter Balance is my new can't live without, or maybe better yet, how-on-earth-did-I-do-without? the first time around. I think we'll be picking up the Wooden Toy bar soon.

What items that you have now do you wish you had used for your first baby?

Disclosure: Certain items (Babysitter Balance, Carseat sidekick, and Trash Dash) were provided to me free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion.
They all earned their place in this list. All other items were purchased, gifted, or won by me.

Our table tantrums are over! CLOSED

I don't think I've ever lamented talked about the epic tantrums we've had trying to get Carina to the table for meals over the last few months. We retired the giant high chair at the end of the summer because she would go stiff as a board and scream bloody murder every time we tried to strap her in. Then we dug our trusty old table chair out of the closet and it was hit or miss; sometimes she would tolerate it, while other times you would think we were making her dine in a torture device. Lastly, we tried a booster seat with tray and unfortunately, that went just as well. Tray and food {and my sanity} strewn about the floor.

So when Baby Bjorn asked me if I'd like to try their new Booster Chair, I was completely honest with them. This was my response, verbatim: "We would love to try it, although I should warn you that my toddler is currently revolting against the booster we bought recently. That could either make us the perfect test subjects (maybe yours will do the trick!), or the worst (maybe she hates all boosters?)"

They were up for the challenge! Baby Bjorn was founded in 1961 with the simple goal of  making life easier for families with small children by developing safe and innovative products of the highest quality.

I was a bit nervous the first time we put Carina in the booster; I was sure an apocalyptic meltdown would ensue. I called it her "big girl seat" and told her that big girls love it. And? No screaming. No kicking. She actually SAT STILL AND ATE.

My kid - IN A BOOSTER
After she finished eating, I helped her down. And then she started whining, "big girl seat, big girl seat!" She already wanted to get back in it. The Booster Chair makes sitting down to eat meals no longer a struggle for us.
Perfect height!
My favorite features of the Baby Bjorn Booster Chair:
  1. It's portable; it hooks on almost any chair and unhooks like a breeze. Bonus: it is only 2.6 lbs., so you can easily bring it anywhere. We're taking it with us when we leave {this afternoon!} for our holiday travels (we're heading up to Massachusetts, then Philadelphia until New Years').
  2. It's easy to clean; just wipe it with a damp paper towel or cloth.
  3. Tightening the seat onto a chair is as simple as pushing in the unique locking mechanism and turning it. You don't have to manually adjust the straps underneath the chair (I looked ridiculous trying to do this with our previous booster).
  4. Most importantly, it makes her happy. This is the 4th chair we have tried thus far and it's the only one with which she can sit at table height comfortably AND have her plate on the table. She truly feels like a big girl and a more integral part of the family meal when sitting in it.
A few more details:
  • It is made from recyclable plastic and does not contain any PVC or BPA, so it's 100% child and environmentally safe.
  • There is a unique locking mechanism which ensures that children cannot take the booster off of the chair.
  • Non slip straps and mini-pads hold the seat firmly in place.

Fits most chairs!
The one problem we're having is that sometimes, Carina won't stay seated since there is no strap. But if there were a strap, she would most definitely protest getting in the Booster Chair (like she did with the other seats we attempted). We're in the process of teaching her that we sit down at the table and we're crossing our fingers that it sticks soon. But honestly, we'll take her standing up a couple times over screaming through the duration of the meal any day ;)

Burping in style: luna and bean - Review & Giveaway! CLOSED

I'm guessing the words "burp cloths" have never really elicited any sort of excitement from you, have they? Personally, I've always opted for function over cuteness after finding that all of the adorable ones I had bought for Carina were about as permeable as plastic. They weren't so cute anymore after they {and I} were covered in spit up. But who says that you can't have the best of both worlds? Laura of luna and bean has combined the most charming and fun fabrics I have ever seen with amazing absorbency that any Mom who has experienced projectile baby-horror can appreciate.

More about Laura:
I am the designer behind luna and bean. I started sewing baby items a few years ago when a lot of my friends and family members were pregnant. I moonlight as a baby items designer at night and a graduate student by day (among other jobs and internships). Because my studies aren't exactly in the creative realm, I needed a way to express that side of my self. All of my preggo friends gave me the perfect opportunity and before I knew it, luna and bean was born.

More about luna and bean:
I started my Etsy shop in January of this year hoping at best to make a few sales a month. I have been so blessed with the response to luna and bean products - it's wonderful to think that babies around the US are enjoying them! I strive to make top quality, handmade, beautiful items that are both practical and stylish for mom and baby. Just because feeding can be messy task, who says it can't be beautiful as well?

Laura sent this adorable 3 pack of burp cloths for baby Aurelia. They are much larger than the Gerber prefolds I have used for so long and are much much cuter! They are also just as {if not more} absorbent. I have been really impressed with how well they wash and contain Aurelia's messes ;) I am for sure stashing one of these in the diaper bag for when we are out and about; I would choose one of them over a Gerber prefold any day. I think that these burp cloths make a fantastic baby shower or baby gift for any Momma.

Made of large 100% cotton premium pre-fold diapers that are washed and pre-shrunk; fashionable embellishment also made of 100% cotton. Burpies are made with premium fabrics that cover the entire length of the pre-fold diaper and 10 inches of width! Grosgrain ribbon accents the fabric.

So pretty on one side - absorbent on the other!

In addition to super cute burp cloths for boys and girls and in neutrals, Laura makes personalized bibs and baby accessories, and adorable stuffed animals. A few of my personal favorites:
